What is a “certified” arborist?

Certified arborists have completed the training and exams necessary for accreditation. You will learn how to prune trees for health and aesthetics and perform tree risk assessments. The knowledge and skills of a well-trained arborist encompass the science and practice of tree care. They work within the field of arboriculture and keep our urban forests healthy and looking beautiful. Arborists take a leading role in educating clients about trees on private land, and maintain safety by removing hazardous trees.

Arborist Training

Arborists may choose to receive training in a specialty and you can research various programs and training providers on the itabc.ca, the official website for the Industry Training Authority of BC.

Arborist Technicians are tree experts that prune and care for trees from the ground. Their skill set includes falling, limbing and bucking trees, and assisting climbers. Other tasks they perform include identifying plants, chipping brush and cleaning up sites. Arborists examine trees for health and correct problems such as insect infestations, disease and soil conditions that may be contaminating trees. You can challenge the certification if you have significant experience in the trade.
Climbing Arborists use highly effective climbing using safety rigging and mechanical lifts to perform tasks that are impossible to reach from ground level. As they are able to reach the highest points in trees, they can assess crown disorders, prune and complete upper crown reduction for tree health.
Utility Arborists and their apprentices are legally allowed to prune or remove hazardous trees within a three meter or less proximity of voltage lines. Utility line clearing is one of their main objectives, implementing safety-first procedures.
